Earlier this month, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission awarded a $25,797 Keystone Historic Preservation Grant to the Juniata County Historical Society. The funds are designated for window repairs and replacement of degraded ultraviolet (UV) protection blinds at the Tuscarora Academy Museum in Academia. This information was shared by Rep. Perry Stambaugh (R-Perry/Juniata).
The museum is housed in a 207-year-old fieldstone building and serves as a repository for many relics from Juniata County’s history. However, it has been plagued by moisture and humidity issues.
In 2022, a successful fundraising campaign led to the completion of a $42,000 project that installed a modern HVAC system in the museum. Despite this progress, window repairs remained necessary. The Juniata County Historical Society received an estimate of $49,894 to weatherize 29 windows and install UV film. The state grant will contribute to this project.
The Juniata County Historical Society was founded in 1931 and manages several properties, including two listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Pomeroy-Academia Covered Bridge, noted as Pennsylvania's longest covered bridge, and Tuscarora Academy, recognized as the first secondary school in the county.
