The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) has announced an investment of over $11.4 million to enhance high-speed internet access in Juniata County. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve connectivity across the state, as highlighted by Sen. Judy Ward, Rep. Perry Stambaugh, and Rep. David Rowe.
Senator Ward emphasized the importance of reliable broadband in today's technological landscape, stating that the projects will "modernize and upgrade internet capability in Mifflin and Juniata County." She noted that this would help residents engage more effectively with their communities.
Representative Stambaugh pointed out that Juniata and Perry counties are among those where more than half of the broadband connections were classified as 'unserved,' with speeds below 25/3 Mbps. He stated that enhanced high-speed internet service "will begin to bridge the rural-urban digital divide."
Representative Rowe also commented on the necessity of reliable internet for economic growth and small business success, expressing excitement about the opportunities this funding could bring to residents.
The funding comes from the federally funded Broadband Infrastructure Program, which awarded $200 million in grants for areas lacking adequate internet service. The PBDA requires grantees to submit regular progress reports and adhere to strict guidelines on fund usage, with all funds needing to be spent by December 31, 2026.
This grant marks a significant step in PBDA's mission to close the digital divide since its establishment by the General Assembly in 2021.
