Happy President's Day! Did you know Mifflin County has ties to Pres. Lincoln? Let us tell you how!
This is the story of the Logan Guards, the Civil War's First Defenders from Lewistown, one of five militia companies from the state to answer Lincoln's call for volunteers in April 1861. Collectively referred to as "First Defenders", these soldiers were billeted in the halls of Congress when they arrived in Washington, DC in defense of the Union. Members of the Logan Guards vividly recalled meeting President Lincoln, as weapons and supplies were distributed to them upon their arrival in the Capitol city. The image below depicts a mural by the late artist, Dwight Kirkland, showing Lincoln and members of the company. It is painted on the old Masonic Building on the southeast corner of Monument Square in downtown Lewistown, just across the street from the location where the Logan Guards mustered before setting off form Washington, DC on April 17, 1861.
