Crusaders Fall to Excellent Spartans’ Squad in District 3 Soccer Final

Webp soccer 1000

Our Lady of Good Counsel Church issued the following announcement on Nov. 11.

On a perfect day to play soccer at Hersheypark Stadium’s pitch, the number two seed Bishop McDevitt girls’ ran into defending District 3 champion and senior-laden Wyomissing in the District 2A championship. The Crusaders field a majority of underclassmen, yet for the first 40 minutes they played the Spartans about even, proven by the zero knotted score at halftime.

But a minute into the second half, Wyomissing’s relentless offensive pressure finally produced a goal against the Crusaders’ back line that was bending all game long against the Spartans, who not only put speed and quickness on the field, but ball handling skills designed to create possession time as well. And a few minutes later, the Spartans tallied again to go up 2-0 with 30 minutes left.

Give the Crusaders credit, however, for not surrendering, as they answered with a nifty goal on a great ball by freshman, Cathleen Mooney, setting up an equally fine header by Lindsey Husic to make the score 2-1.

The experienced Spartans sealed the Crusaders’ fate with ten minutes left in regulation with a breakaway open field goal by Wyomissing’s Hannah Hurleman to make it 3-1.

The Crusaders lost in the first round of the state championship to District 4’s Central Columbia, 2-0, in the PIAA state playoffs, to finish their season 16-5-1, but with a District 3 silver medal to show for a great season.
