According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the older adult population in the United States is rising while numbers among younger age groups are dropping. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans 65 and older increased by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decrease among those under 18. The country’s older adult population has seen significant growth in the past 100 years, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.

A study in 2021 indicated that nearly half of older adults, or about 28 million people, may need long-term services and support. The research also forecasts that more than one-third could eventually require care in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
