Legislation introduced by Senator Greg Rothman (R-34) has been approved by the Pennsylvania Senate, aiming to increase the flexibility of state funding for local bridge projects.

Currently, counties receive funds from the Highway Bridge Improvement Restricted Account in the state Motor License Fund. These funds are designated for repairing and replacing county-owned bridges. However, under existing law, any remaining money cannot be used for other purposes. The new proposal, Senate Bill 1070, would allow counties to use leftover funds to improve municipal-owned bridges within their boundaries before these structures become at risk.

“Maintaining safe roads and bridges is a core function of government,” Rothman said. “My legislation removes barriers and gives counties the flexibility they need to make necessary repairs to both county-owned and municipal-owned bridges.”

The bill will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
