The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) has announced an investment exceeding $11.4 million for Juniata County to enhance access to high-speed internet. This initiative, as per Senator Judy Ward, Representative Perry Stambaugh, and Representative David Rowe, aims to boost internet reliability and capacity in the area.
Sen. Ward emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “In today’s technological age, access to reliable and high-quality broadband is essential. These projects will help to modernize and upgrade internet capability in Mifflin and Juniata County and will help those individuals better engage with the community around them and pursue their best lives.”
Rep. Stambaugh highlighted the current lack of sufficient service in certain counties, noting that “Juniata and Perry counties are among the 11 statewide where more than 50 percent of tested broadband hook-ups were measured as ‘unserved,’ having Internet speeds below 25/3 Mbps.” He believes that better service will address the rural-urban digital divide and enhance telecommunications for local businesses, schools, and families.
Rep. Rowe underscored the need for internet access, saying, “For many, access to reliable, high-speed internet is a necessity. It’s essential for the continued growth of our economy and the success of small businesses.”
The funds for this initiative are provided through the federally funded Broadband Infrastructure Program, which allocated $200 million in competitive grants for projects needing internet service improvements.
To maintain transparency and ensure effective use of funds, the PBDA requires quarterly and annual reports from grantees, alongside guidance on compliance with state and federal requirements. All funds must be utilized by December 31, 2026, with the PBDA retaining the right to reclaim unspent or misused money. This grant marks a pivotal moment in the PBDA’s ongoing efforts to bridge the digital gap.
