Three organizations in Centre and Mifflin Counties are set to receive Cultural and Historical Support Grants from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, announced state Representative Kerry Benninghoff.
The Centre County Historical Society, which operates the Centre Furnace Mansion and Gardens as well as the historic Boogersburg School, will benefit from an $8,000 grant. Similarly, the Mifflin County Historical Society, housed in the historic courthouse in Lewistown, has been awarded a grant of the same amount. Both organizations play significant roles in preserving local history.
Discovery Space, a science center in State College known for its interactive exhibits and programs, is granted $28,800. This institution offers educational experiences to the community.
Rep. Benninghoff expressed appreciation for these organizations, stating, “The Centre and Mifflin County historical societies do a tremendous job of maintaining our local history, and Discovery Space of Central PA is a one-of-a-kind science institution for the public to enjoy.” He also congratulated the grant recipients and emphasized the importance of community support for their missions.
The grant amounts are determined by the organizations’ annual operating budget. The program aims to provide general operating support to Pennsylvania museums and official county historical societies that meet specific funding criteria. These include having an annual budget exceeding $100,000 and at least one full-time professional staff member.
